Five Reasons Why Drug Addicts Can't Kick Their Addiction
Clinical Services

Drug addiction can be absolutely devastating. It not only affects the drug user, but everyone in that person’s life. Drug addicts often become different people and will do just about anything to get their next fix.

Even though some drug addicts realize that they are a slave to their addiction and need to get off drugs, many of them struggle to do so. This is because there is a strong physical component to drug abuse. The body goes through terrible withdrawals which can make relapsing tempting. Other individuals simply are not ready to give up using drugs. For some addicts hanging out with people that are also on drugs or at places where drugs are commonly used, can stymie their efforts. Not dealing with the psychological issues that often are the cause of drug use and a failure to have adequate support can also make it difficult for drug addicts to stop. Below, we will discuss each of these reasons in more depth.

Physical Addiction: The physical part of addiction can be a very big hurdle to overcome when trying to get off drugs. It is during this period that addicts battle extreme cravings and withdrawal symptoms. To ease these symptoms, drug addicts have to battle the urge to get high again. To be successful, entering drug rehab where this process can be monitored or eased with medication or drugs may be required. Checking into a center that specializes in addiction treatment or a drug rehab center can be very helpful.

Not Being Ready: Some drug addicts can’t kick their addictions because they are simply not ready. Quitting drugs will not only require support and direction but also an iron will. If a person is not ready, they will likely suffer a relapse. It is never enough to try to get off drugs to appease one’s family and/or friends.

Unhealthy Friendships: Unhealthy friendships can sabotage a person’s efforts to get clean. If an addict is friends with other addicts that are not trying to get off drugs, there will be strong temptation to resume taking drugs. An important part of recovery is distancing one’s self from people that make recovery more difficult.

Not Dealing with Psychological Issues: In many instances, drug addiction is tied to psychological issues that have not been dealt with. Depression, past abuse and low self-esteem are just some of the reasons that people abuse drugs. In order to help them kick the habit, these issues must be dealt with. Counselling can be a big help.

Not Having Adequate Support: Drug addicts that have more support do better kicking their drug habits than those that do not. Most addicts will not get clean the first time they try. They need understanding (but not enabling) people to encourage them to not give up.
